Parents who wish to look around school or gain information about the school before they apply for admission should visit our web site or contact the school office to arrange an appointment. This will ensure that someone is available to discuss matters uninterrupted.
Admission to Foundation Stage One (Nursery)
Children are admitted to the Foundation Stage using age as a criterion, i.e. oldest children first. There is no separate list for mornings or afternoons, but parents can state a preference. If parents wish to place their child on the waiting list, they should contact the school or The Local Authority (LA) to obtain an application form. The forms should then be returned to the L.A. who will inform you when a place is available.
When a place is offered to your child, you will be contacted by the Foundation Stage Teacher to attend an informal meeting to outline the aims of the Nursery. You will be allocated specific dates on which to visit. Please note that children must be accompanied on these visits.
It is L.A. policy that children from outside the immediate area can attend the Nursery, but, it does not imply that attendance at the nursery guarantees a place in mainstream school. Parents have the right to apply for a place at any school in Barnsley or the surrounding district regardless of their address.
Admission to School (Foundation Stage 2)
In September children are offered a full time place in the Reception Class (FS2). Dependent upon the child’s date of birth parents have the option to take up a part time morning place (9.00-12pm) upto the compulsory school age of the child. Parents who wish to take up this option will need to contact the school directly to make appropriate arrangements. Parents are invited to express 3 preferences on the common application form for school entry. The preferences to be made in rank order. A single offer of a school place will then be made by the Local Authority.
A meeting is arranged for all parents of new school entrants during the half-term prior to the child starting school. It is necessary to apply for admission to the school prior to the year of entry. Parents are invited to apply on line or application forms can be found at the back of the Authority’s Handbook which is distributed from school in September each year. Copies can also be collected from the Education Office. On completion paper application forms should be returned to the chosen school before the closing date for application. All decisions regarding the admission of children coming into school rest with the L.A.
Throughout school classes are organised in a similar manner and regular visits are made between them to familiarise the children with their new environment prior to transition. The arrangement of classes is the responsibility of the Headteacher. The aim is to keep a balance in class size and a balance between boys and girls in each class. As far as possible, consideration will be given to parental opinion. However, the above practice takes a priority in any decisions made.
