Reading Statement of Intent 

“Teach a child to read and keep that child reading and we will change everything. And I mean everything,” Jean Winterson. This quote epitomises the intent of the reading curriculum at Cherry Dale. We want children to learn to read quickly and accurately and to then keep on reading. Using Read, Write, Inc. the children learn to read effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read. We want children to see reading not only as a task set by teachers in school but as an endless activity which provides pleasure and escape from the modern world. We passionately believe that with the right support and a consistent, dynamic approach to the teaching of reading across school that all children can and will learn to read. 

Reading does not stop at the end of the Read Write Inc. session, a love of literature will be at the heart of all learning at Cherry Dale whether it is escaping into Narnia through a wardrobe, entering the forest home of three bears or embarking on a quest to reclaim the kingdom of Erebor.

We aim to provide all of our children with a literacy-rich environment, high quality texts and inspiring learning opportunities which will help all of our children gain a life-long love of reading,  acquire a good linguistic knowledge of vocabulary and grammar and enable them to read confidently and fluently in all areas of the curriculum.
