Phonics and Early Reading
Phonics and Early Reading Intent
At Cherry Dale, teaching our children to read is a top priority. The ability to read fluently with expression and understanding opens up a world of imagination and learning for everyone. We believe that reading is key for academic success and progress across the curriculum and we are dedicated to providing our pupils with the skills and confidence to deal with printed language from a very early age. We provide children with a structured scheme, Read, Write, Inc., that will lead to children becoming fluent readers so that at the end of their primary education at Cherry Dale, they are able to read a wide variety of texts effortlessly.
Read, Write, Inc. Phonics is an inclusive programme for all children learning to read. Children learn the 44 common sounds in the English language and how to blend them using Fred Talk to read and spell words. Pictures and memorable phrases help the children’s retention and recall of phonemes for reading and spelling. Our main aims and objectives through using this programme are to teach children to decode texts effortlessly, so all their resources can be used to comprehend what they read - spell effortlessly so that all their resources can be directed towards composing their writing.
At Cherry Dale, we begin the Read Write Inc Phonics programme right from the very start of Reception and it lasts until children have completed it successfully. This is usually before the end of Key Stage 1.
